A General Election candidate has thanked farmers for their contribution to the local economy, enhancing food security and tackling climate change saying that, if elected, he will listen to and support the local farming community across the Dunfermline & Dollar constituency.
Graeme Downie, Scottish Labour Candidate for Dunfermline & Dollar for the UK General Election, visited James Adam’s cattle and sheep farm near Townhill, just outside Dunfermline, this week, at the start of lambing season.
During the visit to the farm, organised by NFU Scotland, Mr. Downie witnessed first-hand the dedication and hard work undertaken by Mr. Adam and his family in rearing lambs and cattle for market.
Fife boasts over 1,500 agricultural holdings, collectively employ over 3,000 people, with most of the jobs being full-time positions.
As well as seeing the new born lambs and cattle on the farm during the visit, Mr. Adam described the incredible produce made at other farms in West Fife, from fruit and vegetables to milk and cereals, demonstrating the range and scale of the farming sector in the Kingdom.
Commenting after the visit, Mr. Downie said:
“The commitment and hard work of people like James and his family is a critical component of our local economy but sometimes farmers feel they are overlooked or taken for granted.”
“But as well as supporting employment, farming in Fife is critical to improving food security and tackling climate change by providing more local sources of food, reducing reliance on importsand cutting back on food miles.”
“I am very grateful to James for allowing me to visit at such a busy time and to NFU Scotland for helping to organise. As I told James, if I am fortunate enough to be elected at the General Election this year, I will make sure that the contribution of farms and farmers in Dunfermline & Dollar is not forgotten.”
