Cuts by the SNP government in Edinburgh to council budgets has left Fife with an £80m backlog of road repairs, a situation a council candidate has described as “brutal.”
Graeme Downie, Scottish Labour candidate for West Fife & Coastal Villages, has highlighted the figures obtained by the Scottish Labour Party via a Freedom of Information (FoI) request.
They show a total backlog of road repairs in Fife of £77,600,000.
The information comes as the Accounts Commission, an independent audit body, also warned of financial uncertainty and an overall reduction in funding for local authorities.
Commenting, Graeme Downie said:
“The state of roads in West Fife and Coastal Villages are the most visual impact of SNP cuts to local government. It is the issue that comes up most often on the doorsteps and we have seen reports recently of more than 40 pot holes in just one street in Oakley.”
“This is the second report just this week warning of the impact of the brutal cuts to council budgets. It is time for the SNP in Edinburgh to wake up and realise the impact of their utter disregard for local communities. If elected, I will work with local people to Demand Better and Fairer funding for local communities across the West Fife Villages.”
